Fundamentals of Tournament Protocol

A backgammon tournament is not like playing the game with friends in an informal fashion. You can expect a tournament to have rules covering just about anything necessary during the competition. As should be expected, you will also find rules about proper protocol when signing up to play in a tournament. These rules, though they do not actually pertain to matches played, are just as important as other rules.

The rules we'll go over below will deal with the actual rules in a tournament, it's interpretation, the role of some officials concerning these rules, the use of certain equipment, language use, and rules for your guests. We won't be able to cover everything, but we will just go over some preliminary things that every player who is entering a backgammon tournament should know.

Part of protocol deals with how extensive tournament rules are. There are just too many situations in a tournament that we should not expect to have rules to cover everything. Tournament rules should not and obviously can not be too rigid as to try to cover every single possible event. With that as a given, this sets the importance of the tournament director. The director will have enough legroom to exercise judgement in situations not covered by the rules.

In any case, the standard rules of backgammon will still be used in a tournament. However, if there are situations that are beyond the scope of the rules then the tournament director or the tournament staff will find a solution that is just and fair to those concerned.

Usually the staff will consist of a director (or directors) that work with the tournament committee. The staff will represent the committee in resolving concerns that arise during the games. The people called to be part of the staff are disinterested individuals so that they can make fair and unbiased judgements even during rare cases not covered by tournament rules.

All who apply for entry into these tourneys will require an approval. If a player is refused entry, the tournament is not liable to express the reasons for the exclusion. During the matches, players are not allowed to use any electronic or written aids. At the most, you'll only get a paper and a pen but that will be used to record the game or keep the score of the match.

Of course, there will usually be spectators during the actual backgammon matches of the tournament. They are welcome but are not allowed to comment, air their views during the game, or distract the players in any way during a match. Players are allowed to request the removal of spectators in case such things occur.

A tournament is a great experience for any backgammon player. In order to enjoy such experience, certain protocol is required and is expected of everyone including spectators.
